Lagos Island is the main island of the Nigerian city of Lagos and is located in the south of the Lagoon Lagoon . Lagos Island is also one of the 20 Local Government Areas of the state of Lagos .

The natural harbor attracted farmers and fishermen who settled the island in the 14th century. For a long time there was space for all of Lagos on Lagos Island; It was not until the 20th century that Lagos merged with the surrounding towns on the mainland due to its enormous growth, but also due to organized resettlements. Still, Lagos Island remained the center of Lagos. Most of Lagos' government buildings, Catholic and Anglican churches, mosques and the palace of Oba, the traditional king of Lagos, are located here.

Lagos Island is separated from Ikoyi by a channel , which is considered a separate island. Together they have an area of 8.66 km². The last census in 2006 counted 212,700 inhabitants; thus the population density was 24,561 inhabitants / km². The island is connected to the mainland by three large bridges. To the south, on the other side of Five Cowrie Creek , is the Victoria Island peninsula .
