Ikoyi

Ikoyi is an island in the Lagoon of Lagos in the territory of the Nigerian city of Lagos .

Ikoyi is artificially separated from Lagos Island in the west by a canal , but is part of the Local Government Area Lagos Island. Originally Ikoyi was used as a cemetery , in the colonial era mainly Europeans inhabited the island, declared as a Government Reserved Area , on which large colonial houses still stand today. After independence, Ikoyi remained an upscale neighborhood and was the residence of several Nigerian presidents. Today Ikoyi is the location of many administrative buildings, next to hotels, schools, the Ikoyi Park and a well-known golf course . On Ikoyi are the embassies of Angola , Argentina ,Belgium , Canada , the Czech Republic and South Africa .

Ikoyi is considered to have one of the highest land prices in Africa. Since there is hardly any unused land, houses are often torn down after they have been purchased and replaced by new buildings of the desired type.
