background

For the album Insistence , his eighth recording for the SteepleChase label and the second album Ballous with only double bass and drums as support, “the trumpeter Ballou faced perhaps the greatest challenge of spontaneous collective improvisation with two musicians with whom he had previously played and recorded: the bassist Michael Formanek and the drummer Randy Peterson . "Ballou had come into the studio with written compositions, but the session was different, as he writes in the liner notes :" During the fourth take of the session ... we found each other. ”This fourth take is the first cut to Insistence , which presents the recorded takes four to eleven.

reception

Scott Albin said in JazzTimes , "When you hear this clear, well-thought-out, flowing music, you are amazed that it is actually freely improvised." Randy Peterson's cymbal and drum work during the "Finale" is extraordinary. His multi-faceted approach - like his wonderful bass drum accents - is an integral part of the overall success of this piece and the entire album. "It is stimulating, very accessible free jazz by three outstanding musicians in perfect proportions," Albin sums up.

Randy Peterson at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival 2018

The Free Jazz Blog reviewer wrote that in order to play in a trumpet trio, one must be strong in both musical composition and instrument mastery; Fortunately, this trio with Michael Formanek on bass and Randy Peterson on drums is strong enough to avoid the pitfalls of this line-up, to bring abstract improvised music and to concentrate on the interaction and spontaneous creation. "Randy Starts" is not just the title of a song, but as expected the only preconceived part of a piece that starts with Randy Peterson's drums and gives the introduction to the other two. This is music that requires attention, says the author, "music that is not easily accessible in the sense that rhythm and melody are not on the surface of things," but the quality of the game fills a void that too often occurs when instrumentalists are too competent: "They play with the soul, with warmth and with a directness of the approach that immediately appeals." The author sums up Ballou's album is recommended for sensitive listeners who appreciate a little effort when listening.
