Live and act

Maurice Hagemans came from a wealthy banking family. His father inherited the family fortune at the age of 21. Hagemans spent his childhood in Belgium, Italy and Switzerland, where his father carried out archaeological studies. The family returned to Belgium around 1860 and settled in the village of Macquenoise near Momignies in the province of Hainaut . His father became a Liberal MP in 1866.

Young Hagemans graduated from secondary school and decided to become an artist. He began to paint as a self-taught artist around 1873 and helped his father with his archaeological research. In 1874 he met Félicien Rops at an archaeological conference in Stockholm. He invited Hagemans to settle in Anseremme in the province of Namur and to become a member of the group of painters and writers at the local painting school. He made friends with Périclès Pantazis and other artists.

Hagemans stayed in Anseremme for about five years, where he married Marie Bricart. He then settled in Brussels, where in 1883 he became a member of the newly founded "Cercle des Aquarellistes et des Aquafortistes Belges". In the following year he joined the group "Les Hydrophiles", a spin-off from the "Cercle des Aquarellistes". During this time he often traveled to Scandinavia and Germany.

Hagemans moved to Antwerp for a while , and in 1886 he settled in Ixelles. From there he traveled regularly to the Maas Valley to paint. In 1901 he bought the villa "des Pommiers" in Freÿr , where he set up a painting studio. He also stayed regularly on the Belgian coast to paint.

Hagemans died at the age of 65 in his hometown of Ixelles and is buried there in the local cemetery. His son Paul Hagemans (1884–1959) also became a painter.
