Périclès Pantazis ( Greek Περικλής Πανταζής ; also Periklis Pandazis ; born March 13, 1849 in Athens , † January 25, 1884 in Brussels ) was a Greek painter who was mainly active in Belgium .

Pantazis was born in Athens as the son of a teacher from Epirus . From 1861 to 1871 he studied painting at the Athens School of Art as a student of Nikiphoros Lytras . He then studied for a year at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He then traveled first to Marseille and then to Paris. In Paris he learned from Gustave Courbet and Antoine Chintreuil . During this time he also got to know the modern works of Eugene Boudin and those of the Dutch artist Johann Barthold Jongkind. He also came into contact with the impressionist works of Claude Monet , Edgar Degas and Camille Pissarro .

In 1873, with a letter of recommendation from Claude Monet in his pocket, he settled in Brussels . He also accepted an invitation from the rich Greek merchant Jean Economou, who commissioned numerous works from the young painter. In Belgium he became a member of the anti-academic artist group "Circle de la pâte" and became friends with the painter Guillaume Vogels and the sculptor Auguste Philippette, whose sister he married a short time later.

Pantazis' artistic talent quickly became known in Brussels. In 1878 he represented Greece at the Paris World's Fair with his works . His work received excellent reviews.

Pantazis contracted tuberculosis and died shortly before he was 35 years old in Brussels.

Works

Pantazis differs from the other Greek painters of his time, as he was the first to turn away from the so-called Munich School and its academic painting towards Impressionism, which was considered subversive at the time . Together with Guillaume Vogels, Pantazis is considered a pioneer of Belgian impressionism. Pantazis and Vogels founded the Les XX group in 1883 , which Pantazis honored with a retrospective shortly after his death .

Pantazis' works, topographies and full-body portraits are characterized by their sensitive colors and fine shading. It is said that his influence on Greek and European painting might have been greater had he not died so early.
