Fukui ( Jap. 福井市 , - shi ) is a city within the region Chūbu in Japan , just north of the largest lake in the country, the Lake Biwa area. It is the largest city and also the administrative seat of the Fukui Prefecture .

history

The starting point was the castle Kita-no-shō ( 北 ノ 庄 ), later Fukui ( 福 居 ), finally called Fukui ( 福井 ), which was built towards the end of the 16th century and which was expanded from 1600. The place soon had more than 40,000 inhabitants. Later the population sank due to crises. After 1868 Fukui became the capital of the prefecture of the same name.

When the Japanese community was introduced on April 1, 1889, Fukui became an independent city ( shi ). The city was badly damaged by American bombing during World War II and an earthquake on June 28, 1948 that killed over 5,000 people. The city was subsequently rebuilt and has developed into an industrial and cultural center of the region.

Worth seeing are the old castle grounds, today the seat of the prefecture administration, the Fukui City Museum of Art , the Historical Museum and the observatory .
