Tsuruga ( Japanese 敦賀市 , - shi ) is a city in Fukui Prefecture in Japan .

geography

Tsuruga is located south of Fukui and north of Kyoto on Wakasa Bay . It is the largest city in Wakasa Province .

history

The appointment to Shi took place on April 1, 1937 with the merger of the Chō Tsuruga ( 敦賀町 , -chō ) and the Mura Matsubara ( 松原村 , -mura ) in the Tsuruga-gun ( 敦賀郡 ).

Attractions

Large torii ( 大鳥居 , Ō-torii ) of the Kehi-jingū

The Shinto shrine Kehi-jingū ( 氣比神宮 ) is well worth seeing .

Tsuruga is home to around 20 bronze statues of characters and scenes from popular 1970s anime series Uchū Senkan Yamato and Galaxy Express 999 . Although their creator Leiji Matsumoto was born elsewhere, they were erected here in 1999 as part of an exhibition of his work.

In Tsuruga, in the district of Myōjinchō, there are also the Tsuruga nuclear power plant , from which radioactivity has repeatedly escaped, and the decommissioned ATR prototype Fugen, and in the district of Shiraki, the Monju breeder reactor .
