Maibara ( Japanese 米 原 市 , - shi ) is a city in Japan in Shiga prefecture .
geography
The city is located in the northeast part of Shiga Prefecture. It covers 5.1% of the total land area of Shiga. The west of the city borders on Lake Biwa and the mountainous east borders on Sekigahara in Gifu Prefecture .
To the northeast is Mount Ibuki , the city's most important landmark and one of the “100 most famous mountains in Japan”. The Anegawa and Amanogawa rivers flow into Lake Biwa. About 70% of the urban area consists of forest.
history
On November 15, 1923, the Mura Irie ( 入 江村 , -mura ) in the Sakata-gun ( 坂 田 郡 ) became Chō and was renamed to Maihara ( 米 原 町 , -chō ). On September 1, 1956 Maihara ( 息 郷 村 , -mura ) and Maihara ( 醒 井村 , -mura ) were incorporated into the same gun .
The appointment to Shi took place on February 14, 2005 with the merger of the Chō Maihara, Santō ( 山東 町 , -chō ) and Ibuki ( 伊 吹 町 , -chō ) in the Sakata-gun. With the incorporation of Ōmi ( 近 江 町 , -chō ) in Maibara on October 1, 2005, the Sakata-gun was dissolved.
The name of the new city comes from the well-known JR train station, the spelling of which is similar to that of the former Maihara community.
Attractions
Mount Ibuki with a height of 1377.4 m is Shiga's highest peak, a popular ski area in winter and a destination for numerous campers and hikers in summer. A cable car and ski lifts lead to the summit, which offers a good view of Lake Biwa and the surrounding area. The nearest train station is Omi-Nagaoka.
The Samegai Trout Farm was established over a century ago and is Asia's largest trout farm . You can also fish for trout there and there is a shallow pond for children where you can try to catch trout by hand. Restaurants offer fresh trout. Arriving by bus from Samegai train station.
3 of 67 stations on the Nakasendō - an expressway that connected Kyōto with Edo - were in the area of today's city of Maibara: Kashiwabara, Samegai and Bamba. Remnants of the old stations can be seen that were used by travelers for lodging and trading.
Fireflies are found on the Amanogawa River in June . Parts of the river are designated as a protected area for them.
The shore road on Lake Biwa offers a good view when the weather is nice.
Samegai Baikamo are plants whose pretty little flowers bloom underwater in the Jizogawa River.
Maibara Hikiyama Festival in early October is a parade of decorated rafts that have a small stage on which kabuki is performed by children .

Maibara is connected to the Hokuriku Highway to Niigata , the Meishin Highway towards Komaki or Nishinomiya , the National Road 8 towards Niigata and Kyoto and the National Roads 21 and 365.
Maibara has an important transfer station on the important Tōkaidō main line , in which the transit from the network of JR West to that of JR Central and vice versa takes place. Maibara is also the starting point of the JR Central Tōkaidō Shinkansen to Kyoto in 18 minutes, Osaka in 35 minutes and Tokyo in 2½ hours and the JR West Hokuriku main line to Jōetsu . Both the Tōkaidō and the Hokuriku main line are called the Biwako Line in this region around Lake Biwa .
Another line is the Ōmi Tetsudō main line to Kōka .
