Konan ( Japanese 湖南 市 - shi , German 'sea south' ) is a city in Shiga prefecture in Japan , south of Lake Biwa .

history

Old post office building

During the Edo period , Ishibe was a post office ( 宿 場 町 Shukuba-machi ) of the Tōkaidō .

Konan was created on October 1, 2004 through the merger of the Chō Ishibe ( 石 部 町 , -chō ) and Kōsei ( 甲 西 町 , -chō ) in the Kōka-gun .
