Higashiōmi ( Japanese 東近江市 - shi , German 'East Ōmi ' ) is a city in Shiga prefecture in Japan .

history

Main building of the Aga-jinja

Higashi-Ômi was created on February 11, 2005 from the merger of the city of Yōkaichi ( 八日市市 , -shi ) and the Chō Eigenji ( 永源寺町 , -chō ), Gokashō ( 五個荘町 , -chō ) in the Kanzaki-gun ( 神崎郡 ) , Aitō ( 愛東町 , -chō ) and Kotō ( 湖東町 , -chō ) in the Echi-gun ( 愛知郡 ). On January 1, 2006 Notogawa ( 能登川町 , -chō ) were incorporated into the Kanzaki-gun ( 神崎郡 ) and Gamō ( 蒲生町 , -chō ) in the Gamō-gun ( 蒲生 ). The Kanzaki-gun was then disbanded.
