Azuchi ( Japanese 安 土 町 , - chō ) was a Japanese city in Gamō-gun in Shiga Prefecture , located near the east bank of Lake Biwa . On March 21, 2010, they united to form the Ōmihachiman Ward .

history

After Oda Nobunaga had become one of the most powerful men in Japan, he had a mighty stone castle built in Azuchi, which was a small town at the time, in 1576 . He had control of the traffic on Lake Biwa and the highways Tōkaidō and Nakasendō . Because of this castle and Toyotomi Hideyoshi's castle Momoyama, the new period in Japanese history founded by Nobunaga was called the Azuchi-Momoyama period .

The appointment to Chō took place on April 1, 1954 with the merger of the Mura Azuchi ( 安 土 村 , -mura ) and Oiso ( 老 蘇 村 , -mura ).
