overview

There is no written evidence of the establishment of the Kannonshō-ji. According to temple tradition, the Kannonshō-ji is said to have been founded in 605 by the Prince Regent Shōtoku .

The temple site has been located in the summit area of the 433-meter-high Kinugasayama near Lake Biwa since the Muromachi period . The temple was mainly sponsored by members of the local Rokkaku warrior clan. When the nearby castle was conquered by Oda Nobunaga's troops in 1568, the Kannonshō-ji was also devastated, but renovated between 1596 and 1615. In 1993 the main hall was completely destroyed by a fire in which the main portrait, classified as an important cultural asset , also burned. A new building was inaugurated in 2004 together with a new statue of a thousand-armed cannon, made by Myokei Matsumoto.
