Panama is a small town in Le Flore County in eastern US -amerikanischen state of Oklahoma .

geography

Panama is located between Shady Point in the south and Spiro in the northeast . Poteau , the county seat of Le Flore County is located about 15 kilometers to the south. The city of Fort Smith in the state of Arkansas is about 30 kilometers away in the northeast. The main roads US Highway 59 and US Highway 271 run right through the city.

History

The first settlements in the area were established after coal was found and extracted by mining . The place was initially called "Red Town" because of the many buildings painted red. In 1890 about one hundred people lived there. After the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad (later taken over by the Kansas City Southern Railway ) and then the Midland Valley Railroad opened a train station at what is now Panama in 1896, other population groups settled there and developed a transshipment point. In 1898 the city was given the current name Panama. Some chroniclers state that the name of the city was adopted based on the Panama Canal . In the 1930s, coal production initially declined and farms developed. After the commissioning of a local coal-fired power plant by Applied Energy Services Corporation in neighboring Shady Point in 1991, new industrial jobs arose.

Demographic data

In 2011 a population of 1416 people was determined, which means an increase of 4.0% compared to the year 2000. The average age of residents in 2011 was 37.8 years, below the Oklahoma average of 40.6 years. The proportion of indigenous people was given as around 13%.
