Spiro is a small town in Le Flore County in eastern US -amerikanischen state of Oklahoma .
geography
The nearest major city, Fort Smith, in the state of Arkansas , is about 25 kilometers away in the northeast. The Robert S. Kerr Reservoirs , a popular recreational area that offers water sports and hiking trails, as well as fishing and hunting activities, begins a distance of 20 kilometers to the northwest. The Arkansas River touches the outskirts in the north of the city. The main roads US Highway 59 and US Highway 271 run right through the city.
The Spiro Mounds , an important archaeological place of worship, are located about ten kilometers north of Spiro.
history
The first settlements in the area were established by the Choctaw Indians . When the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad (later taken over by the Kansas City Southern Railway ) opened a train station at what is now Spiro in 1896, other population groups also settled there and developed a transshipment point. The town's name was adopted in honor of Abram Spiro , a banker from Forth Smith. Other sources also give the maiden names of women of deserving citizens as namesake. In 1900 there were 543 people living in Spiro. The population then rose to 2221 people in 1980.

In 2011 a population of 2171 people was determined, which means a decrease of 2.5% compared to 2000. The average age of the residents in 2011 was 41.5 years, slightly above the average for Oklahoma, which was 40.6 years. The share of the natives was around 10%.
