Vegetative characteristics

The species grows succulent to woody with a branched trunk and is up to 40 centimeters high. The hairy leaves are hand-shaped and are shed in summer.

Generative characteristics

The inflorescence is unbranched and consists of 1 to 4 individual flowers. Of the five, white or light pink colored petals , the upper two are narrowly obovate or oblong, bent back abruptly by 90 ° above the center and provided with a pinkish-reddish to purple mark at the base. The lower three petals are spatulate and smaller than the upper two. They are less strongly bent back and sometimes drawn with longitudinal lines near the base. There are five equally long and fertile stamens . The pollen is colored orange.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Occurrence

Pelargonium alternans comes from the Western Cape province of South Africa .

Taxonomy

The species was first described in 1798 by Johann Christoph Wendland . Synonyms are Geranium alternans (JCWendl.) Poir. (1811), Otidia alternans (JCWendl.) Sweet (1824), Geraniospermum alternans (JCWendl.) Kuntze (1891), Otidia corallina Eckl. & Zeyh. (1836), Pelargonium corallinum (Eckl. & Zeyh.) Steudel (1841), Otidia microphylla Eckl. & Zeyh. (1836) and Pelargonium microphyllum (Eckl. & Zeyh.) Steudel (1841).

The species belongs to the section Otidia (Lindl.) Harv. It is rated “Least Concern” in the Red List of Endangered Plant Species in South Africa.
