Hikone ( Japanese 彦 根 市 , - shi ) is an old castle town in the Japanese prefecture of Shiga .

history
The appointment to Shi took place on February 11, 1937 with the merger of the Chō Hikone ( 彦 根 町 , -chō ) with the Mura Aonami ( 青 波 村 , -mura ), Chimoto ( 千 本村 , -mura ), Fukumitsu ( 福 満 村 , - mura ), Matsubara ( 松原 村 , -mura ) and Kitaaoyagi ( 北 青 柳 村 , -mura ) in Inukami-gun ( 犬 上郡 ).
On June 10, 1942, Isoda ( 磯 田村 , -mura ) and Minamiaoyagi ( 南 青 柳 村 , -mura ), on April 1, 1950, Hinatsu ( 日 夏 村 , -mura ) and Kawase ( 河 瀬 村 , -mura ) became Inukami -gun, on April 1, 1952 Toriimoto ( 鳥 居 本村 , -mura ) in Sakata-gun ( 坂 田 郡 ), on September 30, 1956 Kameyama ( 亀 山村 , -mura ) in Inukami-gun, on April 3, 1957 Takamiya ( 高 宮 町 , -chō ) in Inukami-gun and on April 1, 1968 Inae ( 稲 枝 町 , -chō ) in Echi-gun ( 愛 知 郡 ).
