The University of Shiga ( Jap. 滋賀大学 , Shiga daigaku ) is a state university in Japan . The main campus is in Hikone in Shiga Prefecture .

history

The university was founded in 1949 through the merger of the three state schools. The three were:

  • the Shiga normal school ( 滋 賀 師範学校 , Shiga shihan gakkō in Ōtsu , founded in 1875),
  • the normal youth school Shiga ( 滋 賀 青年 師範学校 , Shiga his shihan gakkō in Ōtsu, founded in 1915), and
  • the Hikone Business School ( 彦 根 経 済 専 門 学校 , Hikone keizai semmon gakkō ).

In 1922 the Hikone Higher Commercial School ( 彦 根 高等 商業 学校 , Hikone kōtō shōgyō gakkō ) was founded. It was the 9th oldest of the Japanese state higher commercial schools and the predecessor of the economics faculty. One of the famous graduates was Sōsuke Uno , who later attended the Kobe Business University . In 1944, during the Pacific War , the commercial college was changed to a technical college. In 1946, however, the school was changed to a business school again, and the former technical college became a prefectural school (now the technical faculty of Shiga Prefectural University).

Shiga University opened with two faculties: Liberal Arts (in the older Ōtsu campus) and Economics (in the Hikone campus). The Faculty of Liberal Arts moved to today's Ōtsu campus in 1959 and was renamed the Faculty of Education in 1966. To date, the university has not had a unified campus.
