Didier van Cauwelaert (born July 29, 1960 in Nice ) is a French writer from a family of Belgian descent.

Didier van Cauwelaert has been writing since childhood. After working as an actor and as a director of plays by Samuel Beckett , Jean Anouilh and Eugène Ionesco , as well as contributions as a critic for children's literature, he received the first positive response from a publisher in 1981 to one of his submitted manuscripts. His literary career began in 1982 with his debut novel Vingt ans et des poussières . Since then he has written several novels, most of which have received good reviews and have been translated into different languages. He also wrote comic texts in collaboration with the artist with Franck Bonnet and writes plays and screenplays. Van Cauwelaert has received various literary prizes, including the Prix ​​Goncourt in 1994 for his novel Das Findelkind ( Un aller simple ), which Laurent Heynemann made a film based on his own script in 2000 . In March 2009 he was a candidate for a chair in the Académie française to succeed the late Maurice Rheims , but was not elected.
