Matsue ( Japanese 松江 市 , -shi ) is a city , seaport and administrative seat of Shimane Prefecture in the western part of Honshū , the main island of Japan , on the coast of the Sea of Japan .
There is a university in Matsue, the consumer goods industry is economically important, and there is both marine and inland fishing, as Shinji Lake , the seventh largest lake in Japan, is located near the city .
In addition to temples, the cityscape includes the historic Matsue Castle (built in 1611 during the Tokugawa period ) with its extensive canal systems.
The Irish-Greek writer Lafcadio Hearn lived in Matsue for about a year .
