Yinchuan ( Chinese  銀川 市  /  银川 市 , Pinyin Yínchuān Shì , short: 銀  /  银 , Yín ) is the capital of the Ningxia Autonomous Region of the Hui nationality in the People's Republic of China and is located on the upper reaches of the Yellow River . The name of the city means silver stream.

Administrative structure

At the county level, Yinchuan is made up of three districts, two counties and one urban district. These are:

• District Xingqing (兴庆区), km² 768, 390,000 inhabitants, seat of the city government;
• Jinfeng District (金凤 区), 290 km², 130,000 inhabitants;
• Xixia municipality (西夏区), 987 km², 200,000 inhabitants;
• Yongning district (永宁 县), 1,295 km², 200,000 inhabitants, capital: Yanghe municipality (杨 和 镇);
• Helan district (贺兰 县), 1,600 km², 180,000 inhabitants, capital: Xigang municipality (习 岗镇);
• City of Lingwu (灵武 市), 4,639 km², 230,000 inhabitants.

The Yinchuan International Car and Motorcycle Tourism Festival has been taking place in Yinchuan since 2000, the largest event of its kind in China with around 3,000 motorcycles, mostly in August.
