The Asaka chūtonchi ( Japanese 朝霞 駐屯 地 , Japanese about "Base Asaka", English Camp Asaka ) is a base of the ground self-defense forces in Japan . The base covers an area of 909,701 square meters and is located in the four municipalities Asaka , Wakō , Niiza and Nerima on the prefectural border between Saitama and Tokyo . It is the headquarters of the "Eastern Army" ( 東部 方面 隊 Tōbu hōmentai , English Eastern Army ).

From 1930 to 1940 the golf course of the Tokyo Golf Club was on the ground ( 東京 ゴ ル フ 倶 楽 部 Tōkyō gorufu kurabu , previously in the later Komazawa Olympic Park , then in Sayama ). From 1941 it served as a military academy for the Imperial Japanese Army ( 陸軍 予 科士 官 学校 rikugun yoka shikan gakkō , literally "Army Officer Preparation School "; upstream of the Army Officer School , previously in Ichigaya in today's Shinjuku district ). After World War II , it was used by the United States military units and was named South Camp Drake until 1960 . During this time the 1st Cavalry Division was stationed here.

The associated shooting range Asaka ( 朝霞 射 撃 場 Asaka shagekijō , English Asaka Shooting Range ) is a shooting range that was built on the occasion of the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo , where the shooting competitions , with the exception of clay pigeon shooting, as well as modern pentathlon shooting were held . At the 2020 Summer Olympics , the shooting competitions will again take place on this shooting range .
