Teemu Tainio (born November 17, 1979 in Tornio ) is a former Finnish football player .

Career

Tainio, who was active in Finland for TP-47 Tornio and Haka Valkeakoski , moved to France for AJ Auxerre when he was 18 . In eight years, the midfielder made 148 appearances and 14 goals. However, he was repeatedly thrown back from injuries. In 2003 and 2005 he won the French Cup with Auxerre , but was not used in both finals.

In 2005 Teemu Tainio signed a contract dated until 2008 with the English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur . For the 2008/09 season he moved to Sunderland AFC on a free transfer . On September 1, 2009 it was announced that Teemu Tainio will be loaned to the first division club Birmingham City for the rest of the season .

On August 31, 2010, AFC Sunderland dissolved his contract. On the same day Tainio signed a one-year contract with the Dutch first division club AFC Ajax . His first appearance was on September 11, 2010. In the game against Willem II Tilburg, he was substituted on in the 85th minute. In March 2011, he accepted an offer from the New York Red Bulls.

After his contract was not renewed in late 2012, Tainio moved back to his home country in early January 2013 and signed a two-year contract with the record champions HJK Helsinki until the end of December 2014 . He ended his active career there after the end.

National team

Tainio played a total of 64 games for the Finnish national team from 1998 to 2014, scoring six goals.
