Hey Jude is a Beatles song that was released as a single on August 26, 1968 . The song was, as usual in Beatles times, attributed to the composer duo Lennon / McCartney , although it was composed almost exclusively by Paul McCartney . Hey Jude is the most successful single of the band with about 7.5 million copies sold.

background

McCartney originally wrote the song for John Lennon's then five-year-old son Julian . John Lennon had recently separated from his first wife, Cynthia , and Julian rarely saw his father. Accordingly, the title line initially read, appropriately for Julian's nickname, “Hey Jules , don't make it bad. Take a sad song and make it better ”. Only later did McCartney change the text to "Hey Jude ..." in order to circumvent this obviousness.

The line of text "The movement you need is on your shoulder" was originally intended by McCartney only as a preliminary text. Only at the encouragement of John Lennon was the line retained in the published version.

Harmony

The song uses the major cadence chords in the key of F in the verse . The subdominant parallel is added in the bridge . In addition, the bass instrument's tone, which is often not on the root of the respective triad, is a characteristic of the piece.

In the approximately four-minute coda at the end of the song, the seventh degree in major , which is not the ladder's own, is used.

The piece was recorded on July 29th and 30th, 1968 at Abbey Road Studio 2 , further overdubs took place on July 31st and August 1st at Trident Studios in London . The usual band line-up (Paul McCartney: vocals, piano , bass; John Lennon: acoustic guitar , choral singing ; George Harrison : solo guitar, choral singing; Ringo Starr : drums , tambourine , choral singing) was accompanied by a 36-piece orchestra with 10 violins , 2 violas , 3 Celli , 2 double basses , 2 flutes , 2 clarinets , bass clarinet, bassoon , Kontrafagott , 4 trumpets , 2 horns and 4 trombones . The same musicians also formed the choir, which repeated the line “Na na na na-na-na-na, na-na-na-na Hey Jude” at the end of the song for several minutes. Recording technicians were Ken Scott and Barry Sheffield. Six recordings were made with Take 26 (with overdubs) released. McCartney remembered a curious incident while recording the play. He had already started a take and hadn't noticed that Ringo Starr had briefly left the studio for a toilet break. Starr returned just in time for his assignment. McCartney said: "His timing couldn't have been more perfect!"

On September 4, 1968, the Beatles made a television recording at London's Twickenham Studios to promote the play. The recording initially shows Paul McCartney on the piano and the rest of the Beatles accompanying him on their instruments, with George Harrison playing the bass. In the well-known final chorus, they are accompanied by a group of several hundred randomly assembled fans.

Others

  • At the time of its release, Hey Jude was the longest single to date with over seven minutes.
  • Although John Lennon thought the piece was one of the best songs of McCartney's pen, he insisted instead on the release of his own composition Revolution as a pre-release single for the late-year album The Beatles . Ultimately, however, Hey Jude prevailed because of its higher level of commercialism , and Revolution came on the B-side of the single. Hey Jude is not included on the album .
  • The single Hey Jude / Revolution is the first release of the Beatles own label Apple .
  • In Australia the single was number 1 in the singles charts for 13 weeks, longer than any other single up to then. With Fernando from ABBA (14 weeks) and Shape of You from Ed Sheeran (15 weeks), only two singles have managed to stay at the top of the Australian chart for longer.
  • The music magazine Rolling Stone chose the song in 2004 as number 8 of the 500 best songs of all time .
  • The song formed the end of the opening ceremony for the Summer Olympics in London, performed by Paul McCartney on July 28, 2012 .
  • To the sound of the song, Paul McCartney received an honorary doctorate from Yale University on May 26, 2008 .
  • A parody of the song can be heard in an episode of Sesame Street under the title Hey Food .
  • The song also found its way into new music . In his 1969 resulting Requiem for a Young Poet used Bernd Alois Zimmermann in collage technique excerpts from Hey Jew , which are recorded on tape.
  • In 2014 Hey Jude served as background music in a Polish EU commercial.

Cover versions

Elvis Presley recorded a cover version on January 21, 1969 at American Studios in Memphis . However, this was only released in 1972 on the album Elvis Now . There are other cover versions of the soul singer Wilson Pickett from 1968 and of Ella Fitzgerald on the album Ella Fitzgerald's Sunshine of Your Love from 1969. There is an alienated version of this piece by Don Ellis , which appeared on his 1970 live album Don Ellis at Fillmore appeared. Jasmin Tabatabai sings the song on her third album Jagd auf Deer (2020). German cover versions sang Peggy March (1972), Jürgen Marcus (1976) and Juliane Werding (1977) , among others .
