Past Masters (an English play on words: about "old masters" and "former masters ") are two compilation albums ( Past Masters • Volume One and Past Masters • Volume Two ) by the British musical group The Beatles , which were released simultaneously on March 7, 1988. These are the tenth and eleventh compilation albums of the Beatles after their separation, which contain previously published recordings, in the USA their eighth and ninth.
Emergence
Before the two albums Past Masters Volume One and Past Masters Volume Two were released, EMI released the twelve British studio albums of the Beatles and Magical Mystery Tour for the first time on CD between February and October 1987 . In these releases, the songs that appeared separately on singles , B-sides or EPs or that were otherwise not available on the regular albums were not taken into account and were instead included in chronological order on the two albums Past Masters • Volume One and Past Masters • Volume Two released. The aim of the release of the two Past Masters CD albums was that all of the Beatles' songs should be available on compact discs. The two albums contain 13 British single A-sides, of which only Love Me Do , in a different version, was released on a Beatles studio album. While Past Masters • Volume One and Past Masters • Volume Two were released on two separate CDs, the double vinyl album Past Masters Volumes One & Two was released at the same time .
The majority of the songs on the album can be heard in stereo , although originally they were only available in mono when they were first released . For most of the songs, EMI used stereo versions that were produced on the occasion of other publications.
The stereo version of This Boy was taken from the Australian single (catalog number: Parlophone A8103) and the Canadian single (catalog number: Capitol 72144), while the stereo version of She's a Woman came from the Australian compilation album Greatest Hits Volume 2 (catalog number: Parlophone PCSO 7534). Both songs were first released in stereo in 1982 on an additional EP, which is in the EP box The Beatles EPs Collection .
Yes It Is was first released in Great Britain on the Only Beatles cassette (catalog number: Parlophone SMMC 151) in stereo. The stereo version of Yes It Is originally appeared on the Japanese EP Help! (Catalog number: Odeon EAS 30006). Sometimes, however, mono versions were also used, although stereo mixes of the corresponding songs were available ( From Me to You , Thank You Girl , Come on, give me your hand and she will love you ) .
The result of the mastering was supervised in addition to George Martin by the sound engineer of Abbey Road Studios Mike Jarrett. Each song is briefly commented on in the booklet by Beatles expert Mark Lewisohn .
In January 1997, both albums were in the United States with platinum awards for each one million copies sold.
Re-releases
- On September 9, 2009, the album was released again as part of a re-release of the entire Beatles catalog, which was remastered . Past Masters was also re-released, but the two previously individually available albums Volume One and Volume Two were combined into a CD double album . At the same time, all songs - if available - were replaced by stereo versions, such as From Me to You , Thank You Girl , Come on, give me your hand and she will love you . As mono versions of the album Love Me Do , She Loves You , I'll Get You and You Know My Name (Look Up the Number) were still available, with the single version of Love Me Do the master tapes could not be found, so the source a vinyl single was used. The double CD was remastered by Guy Massey, Steve Rooke, Paul Hicks and Sean Magee. The fold-out CD cardboard cover was redesigned by Drew Lorimer. The stereo double CD also includes a 32-page booklet that contains photos of the Beatles, general information and information about Kevin Howlett's recordings. The album was also part of The Beatles Stereo Box Set .
- Also on September 9, 2009, the box set The Beatles in mono was released , which includes all mono versions of the Beatles albums and the exclusive album Mono Masters , on which all mono versions of the Beatles singles can be heard. It also includes five previously unreleased mono mixes of songs made for a planned but unreleased Yellow Submarine EP: Only a Northern Song , All Together Now , Hey Bulldog , It's All Too Much and Across the Universe . For the album, the analog master tapes were transferred. The double CD was also remastered by Guy Massey, Steve Rooke, Paul Hicks and Sean Magee. Mono Masters is not available separately.
- The remastered stereo vinyl double LP was released in November 2012 with The Beatles Remastered Vinyl Box Set and separately, the remastered mono vinyl triple LP in September 2014 with The Beatles In Mono Box and separately.
- The album was first published in download format on November 16, 2010 on iTunes , and from December 24, 2015, the album was also available from other providers and streaming services.
