Lake Brunnsviken is a Swedish inland lake on the border between Stockholm and Solna . It is about 3.5 km long and about 0.4 to 0.5 km wide.

history

Brunnsviken, by Martin Rudolf Heland (1765–1814).

The name Brunswiken has been documented since 1499. The origin of the word brunn (well) is unknown, the word viken (bay) probably comes from the time when the lake was really still a bay of the Baltic Sea . During the Viking Age , Brunnsviken, like Lake Mälaren , had a mobile connection with the Baltic Sea. However, the ongoing land uplift has broken contact. On a map from 1702, the Brunswiken is named frisk sjö , meaning drinking water lake.

Culture and buildings

There are a number of interesting cultural sights around Lake Brunnsviken. In the middle of the 18th century Gustav III. big plans for the lake and its surroundings. After his trip to Italy from 1783–84 he wanted to create a counterpart to the Campagna Romana there , hence the Italian-sounding place names around the lake: Albano , Frescati , Tivoli . Of all this, only the Hagapark on the west bank of the lake was realized, the park in the English style of the architect Fredrik Magnus Piper with its many cultural and historical buildings.

Other facilities are Bergianska trädgården (Stockholm Botanical Garden) on the east bank and several institutions of Stockholm University , Bellevuepark in the south and the royal cemetery Haga , opposite Bellevuepark. Not far from there is Stockholm's oldest country inn, Stallmästaregården , which has been in operation without interruption since 1645. There are a number of boat clubs around Brunnsviken, the oldest being the Segel Sällskapet Brunnsviken from 1889. In modern times, the Swedish main office of the airline SAS has been established in Frösundavik . Lake Brunnsviken has been part of the National City Park since 1994 .

Water problems

Over the years Brunnsviken became more and more polluted and looked more like a sewer than a lake with drinking water. To eliminate this problem, a short canal to the east to the Baltic Sea was blown up in 1863 and in order to clear the new connection, the level of the lake had to be lowered by about 1.25 meters. However, this meant that part of the artificially created canals in Hagapark silted up. Through the canal, the Brunnsviken has a certain exchange with fresh water from the Baltic Sea bay Stora Värtan and thus, strictly speaking, the lake is no longer an inland lake. Today the water is of good quality again and there are several bathing places around the lake.
