Fredrik Magnus Piper (* 1746 ; † 1824 ) was a Swedish architect at the court of Gustav III.

Background and education

Fredrik Magnus Piper came from a noble family that originally came to Sweden from Lübeck . Piper was the leading exponent of landscape architecture in Sweden during his time. He was the first properly trained garden architect in his country. He received his education between 1773 and 1780 during study trips mainly to France , Italy and England . In England he worked temporarily for the Scottish architect William Chambers , the planner of Kew Gardens in London. The English landscape park with its organic, preserving forms, the highest at that time fashion in Europe was deeply impressed Pieper. He brought home a large number of sketches and drawings from his travels and it was he who introduced the idea of ​​the English Landscape Park in Sweden.

The Swedish King Gustav III. was taken with the English Garden and made Piper his court architect, responsible for the royal pleasure gardens . In 1781 Piper presented a general plan for an English park, Hagapark , in the municipality of Solna near Stockholm. The design of the Hagapark was carried out entirely according to his plans and is now a popular destination. In 1777 Piper was commissioned to expand the Baroque garden of Drottningholm Palace with an English park to the north. In 1786 the Turkish kiosk was built according to his plans in Hagapark. Other works include a. the unfinished Tivoliparken Lake Brunnsviken in Stockholm in 1786, the Bellevue Parking in the north of Stockholm, the English Park in Forsmarks ironworks and the Villa Liston Hill in neoclassicism on Djurgården in Stockholm from 1791. In 1799 was Piper to the director of the school of architecture at the Kungliga Academies för de fria konsterna (Royal Academy of Liberal Arts) in Stockholm.

Today a park and a street in the municipality of Solna that bear his name commemorate Fredrik Magnus Piper.
