history

Castle

Near Berdum there was the abandoned Bedden Castle , a moated castle , owned by Ocko I. tom Brok from the East Frisian family of chiefs tom Brok since 1317 .

Storm surge

The low Berdumer Altdeich was built in the late Middle Ages (around 1570) to defend the castle and village against flooding throughout the Harlingerland . Newer and higher levees were completed in 1598 and 1658. In 1658 Neufunnixsiel was founded as Sielort . The new dykes in Harlingerland could not withstand every flood. The heaviest storm surge in the history of East Frisia was the Christmas flood of December 24th to 25th, 1717. In the Berdum parish, 113 deaths were counted. Berdum was one of the worst hit villages. Almost every family suffered fatalities.

Attractions

Parish Church of Maria Magdalena

The brick church in Berdum , which was rebuilt and consecrated on a terp in 1801, has demonstrably a previous building. In the church there are two painted carved figures on the north wall under the gallery, probably by Jacob Cröpelin from Esens (around 1650). The organ by Joachim Richborn (1677) was sold to Grimersum in 1789 and later replaced by a new one. In 1878 Gerd Sieben Janssen built today's instrument with a neo-Romanesque prospect .

Berdum Mill

The Erdholländer , built in 1820, was renewed in 1909, but in 1972 it was closed for economic reasons. The mill has been leased and renovated by the Förderverein Mühlendorf Berdum eV since 1989. The mill and miller's house are - like the church - a listed building .
