Buttforde is a district of the city of Wittmund in the district of Wittmund in Lower Saxony .

Place name

The folk etymological interpretation that the name Buttforde is related to the catch of buttfish has to be contradicted. Older spellings such as Butefode , Butaforda , Butefoerde and Buthfoerde indicate the origin of the Low German buten (High German: outside ). Forde , the second part of the place name, means "an artificial ford , bridge or dam" in the East Frisian area . Buttforde means outer ford or outer dam , maybe also outer dike .

geography

Buttforde is a heaped village . It is located on the edge of the historic Harle Bay on a Geest island off the Oldenburg-East Frisian Geest ridge. The soil north of the Geestinsel consists of clay , while so-called knickland predominates in the southern area . Apart from the Wurten and Geest breakthroughs, Buttforde is almost flat. The height above sea level is between 0.7 and 2 meters.

Buttforde is surrounded by the following villages: Werdum , Funnix , Blersum , Burhafe and Stedesdorf . District road 16 , which connects the B 210 with Werdum, runs through Buttforde . In Buttforde, the district road 17 branches off to Funnix.

history

Buttforde's beginnings are in the dark. In the entire area of the village, however, flint artefacts were found that indicate a settlement in prehistoric times. Fragments discovered on a terp 1400 meters south-east of Buttforde indicate a high or late medieval settlement. A parish that belonged to the broadcasting district of the Stedesdorf church can be traced back to the first half of the 13th century. The current Buttford Church presumably had an early medieval predecessor. Buttforde is first mentioned in 1420 In the Stader Copiar (a directory of the churches assigned to the diocese of Bremen ) Buttforde is mentioned in 1420 as Buteferde . A chief named Aybo to Buthfoerde is attested for 1455 . The abandoned Warnsather castle is said to have been the seat of the chiefs of Buttforde.

Around 1600, Buttforde was incorporated into the Principality of East Friesland along with the other places in Harlingerland and shared its eventful history. Buttforde came to Prussia in 1744, to France in 1807, to the Kingdom of Hanover in 1815 and again to Prussia from 1866. Until 1806 Blersum and Buttforde formed a bailiwick of the Wittmund office. From 1810 to 1813 the village on the former Harle Bay belonged to the Ostems department, Arrondissement Jever, Canton Wittmund . Towards the end of French rule, Buttford moved to Esens together with Dunumer , Stedesdorfer and Burhafer citizens in order to destroy the offices of the Napoleonic occupation authorities there. 1824 Buttforde was from the Amtsvogtei Funnix managed and from 1885 by the newly formed district Wittmund .

On August 16, 1972 Buttforde was incorporated into the district town of Wittmund.

Residents

At the end of 2006, Buttforde had a total of 436 inhabitants on an area of 24.34 square kilometers. In the past, the population was considerably higher. The declining population is explained, among other things, by the decline in jobs in agriculture.

religion

Most of the inhabitants of Butforde have belonged to the Evangelical Lutheran Church since the Reformation . Late 17th century won by the Esenser Pastor Johann Husius of pietism impact on community life. In 1713 Pastor Aegidius Lindenberg , who came from Danzig and was transferred from Woquard to Buttforde, created his own catechism , which was strongly influenced by Calvinism . Since he was removed from office three years later, his influence on theological development was limited. Until 1978 the parish had its own pastor. After Buttforde was looked after by a clergyman together with Funix and Werdum since then, the St. Marien parish has shared a pastor's position with the Lutheran congregation in Werdum since 2003.

The 34  Roman Catholic Christians belong to the Catholic parish of Wittmund. The Evangelical Methodist Church Neuschoo and the Baptist congregations in Jever and Esens are responsible for the spiritual care of free-church Christians .

Attractions

The St. Marien Church in Buttforde, which was attached to the former Sendkirche in Stedesdorf , is significant, even beyond the borders of the Harlingerland . The granite ashlar church was built between 1220 and 1240. In 1681 another porch was built, which was completely renovated in 2005. In the church is the still-preserved and functioning organ of the master Joachim Richborn from 1681.

In the separately standing bell tower hangs the Marienglocke of the bell founder Berend Klinghe zu Bremen (1456 to 1474). This bell was originally intended for the church in Fulkum (today in Holtgast ) and was acquired by the parish of Fulkum in 1475. The church is a listed building .

Personalities

  • Folkert Krey , schoolmaster in Buttforde. In 1738 he published an arithmetic book which was used for a long time in East Frisian schools and which was published in the 15th edition by Hoffmann in Blersum in 1839. The popularity of this arithmetic book is also shown in a proverbial phrase that is still used here and there in East Friesland: "Dat is so seeker as twê mal twê vêr sünd, na Folkert Krey sîn Rekenbôk."
