Folkert Krey

Folkert Krey (born January 16, 1692 in Buttforde ; † October 21, 1775 ibid) was a German village school teacher, organist and author of a well-known arithmetic book for East Frisian elementary schools.

Life

On his mother's side, Folkert Krey came from a long-established Buttford family. His father was Hermann Krey (1656-1727) born in Eggelingen , his mother Alget Folkerts (1664-1724). He was the oldest child of five siblings.

In his first marriage, Folkert Krey was married to Anna Elisabeth Helmrichs, who was also from Buttforde. The couple had two daughters and four sons. Two years after the death of his first wife, on April 23, 1754, he married Anna Catharina Leiner (1704–1782), who was born in Reepsholt. This marriage presumably remained childless.

Krey worked as a village schoolmaster and organist at the Buttford St. Mary's Church . Folkert Krey became known beyond the narrow borders of his village through the publication of a Low German arithmetic book , which was used for a long time in East Frisian schools. The level of awareness of this arithmetic book is also shown in a proverbial phrase that is still used here and there in East Frisia:

"Dat is so seeker as twê mal twê vêr sünd, na Folkert Krey sîn Rekenbôk."

In 1839, about a hundred years after it was first printed, the 15th edition of Krey's arithmetic book was published. It was taken care of by teacher Hofmann from Blersum .
