Burhafe is a district of Wittmund , Wittmund district , Lower Saxony .

Location and structure

Burhafe is located between Wittmund and Esens and has been part of the city of Wittmund since the municipal territorial reform in the early 1970s. Geographically, the place is located on a Geest foothill. Sands, debris and rubble form the subsoil.

history

Burhafe has always been part of the Harlingerland . In the 15th century the parish of Burhafe belonged to the Sendkirchen area of Stedesdorf . As a regional Ecclesia Matrix, Stedesdorf was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Bremen . The whole of Harlingerland was still Catholic around 1525. The Burhafer pastor Johannes Visbeck had studied in Rostock from 1514 and then in Wittenberg . In Wittenberg, the theologian came into contact with Martin Luther's doctrine of the Reformation and spread it after his studies in Burhafe. It also influenced the two neighboring towns of Dunum and Ardorf . The Reformation in Harlingerland began in the three named communities. Balthasar von Esens , the lord of the Harlingerland, took no initiatives to stop the new movement.

On August 16, 1972, Burhafe was incorporated into the district town of Wittmund.

The St. Florian Church was redesigned as a hall church in 1820/1821 .
