St. Florian Church

The Evangelical Lutheran St. Florian Church in Hauptstrasse 3 in Burhafe , a district of Wittmund , was built in 1821 on a terp as a classical hall church.

history

In the 11th / 12th A wooden church already existed in the 12th century, which was replaced in the 12th century by a tuff building on the raised terp, the remains of which served as the foundation for the new building. At the end of the 13th century a brick church with three vaults was built. When these threatened to collapse at the beginning of the 19th century, today's new building took place. The name indicates that the church was previously dedicated to St. Florian . The free-standing bell tower was probably built in the 15th century.

Furnishing

Rohlfs organ (1794)

The interior is closed off by a wooden ceiling. The equipment of the church comes partly from the previous building. The baroque wooden baptismal font dates from 1657, the altarpiece from 1744.

organ

Johann Gottfried Rohlfs built the organ as his first work in 1794 with ten stops on one manual and attached pedal . In 1904/1905 the instrument was extensively modified by Johann Martin Schmid , with some registers being taken over by Rohlfs. A comprehensive restoration was carried out from 2008 to 2009 with a reconstruction of the state of 1794 and retention of the sub-bass from 1905 by Harm Dieder Kirschner .

In the course of this work, manuscripts from the 15th century were discovered that had served as a seal in the bellows of the organ. These are copies of the “Summa de vitiis” (“Sum of Vices”), which the Dominican Wilhelmus Peraldus wrote about sin in the 13th century, as well as liturgical fragments. Presumably they come from an abolished monastery and after the Reformation no longer had any value for the Protestant East Frisia. In the course of the new church building, the classical pulpit and the west gallery were created.
