The Evangelical Lutheran Maria Magdalena Church stands on a terp in Berdum , a district of the East Frisian town of Wittmund .

history

There is evidence that the church had a previous building that was larger than today's structure. It was demolished around 1800 and replaced by a new brick building in 1801/1802. This was built in the classicism style under the direction of the master builder Ludwig Franzius as a rectangular hall church with a west tower.

Furnishing

The interior is closed at the top with a plank barrel vault.

The box stalls, the Priechen , the large gallery, the pulpit and the altarpiece date from the time the church was rebuilt. The neo-Gothic altar itself dates from the last third of the 19th century.

The two painted carved figures on the north wall under the gallery are significantly older. They were probably created around 1650 by Jacob Cröpelin from Esens for the pulpit of the old church.

The organ of Joachim Richborn from 1677 was after 1789 Grimersum sold there later replaced by a new building. In 1878 Gerd Sieben Janssen built today's instrument with a neo-Romanesque prospect .

The chandelier was donated in 1791 by a parishioner.

The votive ship was created by the Wilhelmshaven model shipbuilder Jarg von Wackerode in 1992. It commemorates the heaviest storm surge in the history of East Frisia, the Christmas flood of December 24th to 25th, 1717. In the Berdum parish alone, it claimed 113 lives.

The oldest piece of equipment in the church is the baptismal font , the foot of which, however, was later replaced with cement. The basin has the shape of an upside-down folding dome. This makes it an art-historical specialty and in this form is unique in East Frisia. It dates from the 13th century and was probably already in the previous church.
