St. Florian in Funnix

St. Florian is the Evangelical Lutheran church in Funnix , a district of Wittmund , which was built on a high hill in the early 14th century .

history

The brick church of St. Florian in Funnix is designed as a rectangular one-room hall. The free-standing bell tower dates from the 13th century. Finds of grave slabs from the 12th century that were discovered during restoration work, as well as furnishings from the 12th century, point to a previous building at the same location.

When the vaults collapsed less than 100 years after they were built , the west side had to be shortened by about 3 meters and rebuilt. In this context, the late Gothic west portal was created. On the north side, the tall, narrow, ogival windows from the time the church was built have been preserved; on the east side they were enlarged around 1500.

The Evangelical Lutheran parish church has been part of the “Reliably Open Churches” association since 2007 in order to increase the attractiveness for tourists with regular opening times. The church is a listed building .

Church interior

The church is one of the youngest in Harlingerland , but has a rich interior. The interior of the church was originally equipped with vaults, as can be seen from the remains of the shield arches. Today the room is closed with a flat wooden ceiling. The interior includes a font and a holy water font from the 12th century.

The carved altar from the late 15th century is of art historical importance . It is equipped with 105 figures which, according to tradition, are said to have carved a one-armed servant. The childhood and passion of Jesus as well as the story of the apostle Andrew are depicted in 17 scenes, six apostle figures in the narrow middle registers of the side wings and St. Augustine and St. Bernhardus as an oil painting on the back wall . The winged altar is probably of Low German origin and shows Dutch influence. Individual scenes and lost figures as well as the color version were renewed in 1668 during a restoration by Jacob Cröpelin from Esens , who also added the inscription on the predella . A total of six carved altars by Cröpelin are still preserved in East Frisia.

Six wooden portraits from the period between 1300 and 1500 and seven Gothic portraits suggest that the art treasures were brought to Funnix from other churches or monasteries in order to save them from the iconoclasm of the Reformation . Today some of the portraits are in the East Frisian State Museum .

The baroque pulpit was created by Cröpelin in 1660. The evangelists are carved as statuettes in round arches between fluted corner columns. The east gallery, including the organ, was moved to the west side in 1953–1955 to provide a view of the altar. 1984–1986 this measure was reversed. On the parapet, twelve painted coats of arms can be seen, which are separated by twisted columns with rococomotives .

organ

The organ was started in the Rococo style by Johann Friedrich Constabel in 1760 and completed after his death by Hinrich Just Müller from Wittmund in 1762. It is richly carved and has eight stops on a manual and attached pedal , six of which are still original. The trumpet was replaced in 1911 by Johann Martin Schmid , the mixture 1953–1955 by Alfred Führer , who also interfered with the historical substance. From 1984 to 1986, when the gallery was relocated, the organ was extensively restored by the same company Führer, who restored the instrument to its original condition.
