Vassil Iliev Evtimov ( Bulgarian Васил Евтимов ; * the thirtieth May 1977 in Sofia , Bulgaria ) is a former French -bulgarischer basketball player , who in various countries of Europe has played.

The biggest success of the two-time European Championship participant, one each for his adopted home France and one for his native Bulgaria, was winning the Saporta Cup with Marousi Athens in 2001. Vasco Evtimov , as he is also known, played in the 2010/11 BBL season , briefly also in the German basketball league at MBC from Weißenfels . There it attracted special attention with a " buzzer beater " from 23 meters. After his contract was not renewed at the turn of the year, he returned to Bulgaria via the French league.

College in the united states

Evtimov grew up in France and was initially active in his youth for French national teams. In 1996 he began studying at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the United States . The university is famous for its Tar Heels basketball team , which was trained by the highly successful coach and Hall of Fame Dean Smith until 1997 . Evtimov was also a player on this team in NCAA Division I. In 1997, the double citizen was called up for Bulgarian military service, which he did, however, in the French military. In order to recommend himself for the French men's national team, Evtimov played in the 1997/98 season in the French LNB Pro A for the club Élan Béarnais from Pau , which were French champions that season. However, participation in the French championship violated the rules of the NCAA, so that he was suspended for several games after his return to college in 1998. Evtimov then finished his studies in the USA and from then on played as a professional in Europe.

Professional in Europe

His first regular professional station was in 1999, the club AO Dafni in Greek Athens . In the following season he moved to local rivals Marousi , with whom he won the Saporta Cup played by FIBA Europe , the follow-up competition to the European Cup Winners' Cup . In 2001 he moved to Fortitudo from Bologna in the Italian Serie A for the first time . In March 2002 he moved to the Russian Perm for Ural Great during the current season . For both clubs he was active in the united ULEB Euroleague , which was now officially the follow-up competition to the European Cup of National Champions . After the end of the 2001/2002 season he returned to France and played in Villeurbanne for the French champions ASVEL , who, however, could not defend the title in the 2002/03 season, but was defeated by Evtimov's former club EB Pau-Orthez in the final. He then moved to the Spanish ACB league to Caja San Fernando from Seville . For the first time, he stayed more than one season with a club, but the second season in the 2004/05 season he did not play for the Andalusian club to the end, but moved back to Italy to Lottomatica in Rome in February 2005 . During his time in Rome Evtimov was diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmias .

After the end of the season he first played in Ljubljana, Slovenia for the local top club and series champion KK Union Olimpija , before moving to Italy again in February 2006 to Upea from Capo d'Orlando in Sicily . The following season he played again at Fortitudo in Bologna, which played this season under the sponsor name Climamio and was honored in February 2007 as "Player of the Week" of the Euroleague, although his team was eliminated in the first group stage. Interestingly, his brother Ilian Evtimov , who was six years his junior , was active at the local rival and previously much more successful club Virtus Bologna . After Fortitudos left the Euroleague, Vasco moved back to the Spanish ACB league in February 2007, this time to Valladolid . In the 2006/07 season still narrowly escaped relegation, but CB Valladolid rose after the 2007/08 season.

Then Evtimov was at the beginning of the 2008/09 season at short notice in his hometown Sofia for Levski before he was committed in December 2008 for four weeks by Trenkwalder Reggio Emilia from Reggio nell'Emilia in the second Italian league LegADue. Subsequently, Evtimov was still active on the Ukrainian Black Sea coast in Yuzhne . The 2009/10 season he played again in the Greek league A1 Ethniki in Athens, this time for Panionios . During the season he moved to Proteas AEL in Limassol , Cyprus , where he first played with his younger brother Ilian. For the 2010/11 BBL season , Vasco finally moved to the German Bundesliga, in which Ilian was already active for the Skyliners Frankfurt from 2007 to 2009. After his contract was not renewed at the turn of 2010/11, he moved to the first French league Pro A for the merger club Paris-Levallois Basket for the rest of the season . With the club, he missed the play-offs for the French championship and was only able to secure relegation with a victory over the first relegated from Vichy .

For the 2011/12 season Evtimov returned to Bulgaria to Levski Sofia. After losing the final of the Balkan International Basketball League just at the organizing Israeli club Hapoel Gilboa Galil, you could not win the final series in the national championship against Lukoil Akademik and had to make do with the runner-up in each case. For the following season Evtimov returned to France and plays for the first division returnee Cercle Saint-Pierre from Limoges . This was followed by further engagements for the French second division club BC Orchies and again for Levski Sofia.

In October 2016 Evtimov announced the end of his playing career.

National team

Evtimov took part in the 2001 European Basketball Championship in Turkey for his adopted country of France . After winning the group, the French selection of the German national team lost in the quarter-finals and ended up sixth behind Russia . As a result, the dual citizen switched to the Bulgarian Association and participated in the 2009 European Basketball Championship in Poland under the legendary Israeli coach Pini Gershon . But even the experience of coach Gershon and player Evtimov did nothing to change the three defeats and the early elimination in the first group stage.
