GS Marousi ( Greek ΓΣ Μαρούσι ), fully Gymnastikos Syllogos Amarousiou ( Greek Γυμναστικός Σύλλογος Αμαρουσίου ), is a Greek basketball team from the Athens suburb of Marousi .

history

The basketball department, founded in 1950, was only promoted to the Greek A1 league in 1998. Since then, the association has continued to develop and is now one of the best addresses in Greece . Despite a small fan base, the club managed to step out of the shadows of its Athens city rivals and also to set accents in European competitions.

The greatest success of the club was winning the Saporta Cup in 2001. Only three years later, the club was also in the final of the FIBA EuroCup , but lost to Unics Kazan from Russia . The most significant success in the Greek league was reaching the play-off finals for the championship of the 2003/04 season, where, however, Panathinaikos was subject to Athens . Against the same opponent, they lost two years later in the final of the Greek club cup.

After Panagiotis Giannakis was the club's coach until 2006, Lefteris Kakiousis, Giannaki's assistant coach at the Greek national team, took over as coach at Marousi.

In the 2008/09 season, Marousi prevailed in the play-off series for third place with 3-2 wins against Aris and thus qualified for the first time for participation in the ULEB Euroleague .

In 2012 the club rose to the second division after 14 years of membership in the first division . Due to financial problems, however, the club decided not to participate in the A2 Ethniki and instead started in the third-class B Ethniki in the 2012/13 season.

Venue

Until 1998 the club played its home games in "Klisto Spyro Louis" in Marousi. Since the promotion to the first division in 1998, the "Dimotiko Gymnastirio Amarousiou" has served as a home, which is only about 500 meters northeast of the Athens Olympic Stadium . The sports hall was built in 1997 and holds 1,350 spectators. This makes it one of the smallest venues in the history of the Greek basketball league .

The ULEB Euroleague games are played by Marousi in the neighboring Olympic Hall .
