Walter Hans Kaufmann

Walter Hans Kaufmann (* 22. April 1901 in Hann Munden. , † 5. March 1977 in Goettingen ) was a German teacher and organ expert .

Life

Walter Kaufmann was born as the son of the businessman Wilhelm Kaufmann and his wife Emilie. Born stupid. After graduating from high school, he studied German, English and history in Jena and Göttingen. During a semester in Leipzig he got to know the organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach . In 1923 he received his doctorate in Göttingen. phil. During his time as a trainee lawyer and from 1926 as an assessor and teacher at the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Emden , he conducted research on the history of the organ landscape in East Frisia . He married Gerda Jürgens (* 1908) from Emden in Celle in 1930. When his wife and child died of childbed fever a year later, he married her sister Katharina (* 1913) in Celle. With her he had two sons and a daughter. Moved to Osnabrück in 1932, he created a work on the organ prospectus that is still relevant today . After his time in military service (from 1943) and as a prisoner of war, Kaufmann continued his service in Osnabrück in 1945. He spent his retirement in Göttingen, where he evaluated his collected research documents. In the 1960s he published his basic organ topographies on the county of Oldenburg and East Friesland , which inventories information from all church archives for all organs in the organ landscape concerned . Because of his ties to East Frisia, which was reflected in numerous publications, the East Frisian landscape awarded him the East Frisian Indigenous State in 1976 .
