The Royal National City Park ( Swedish : Kungliga nationalstadsparken ) is located in the Swedish municipalities of Stockholm , Lidingö and Solna and is the world's first National City Park (Swedish: Nationalstadsparken ). The original name was Ökopark ( Swedish Ekoparken ), not to be confused with Ökopark , a forest area in Sweden operated by the Swedish state company Sveaskog from an ecological point of view.

Many countries, including Sweden, have their nature-protected national parks , which are often far from any building. In the national city park, the idea of creating a national park in a large city and in the immediate vicinity of a large city, with all the buildings , infrastructure , parks, lakes, fauna and flora located therein, was realized for the first time . So in 1994, after a long struggle, the world's first national city park was created in and near Stockholm. According to the government decision, the park has been called the Kungliga nationalstadsparken since 2009 .

The 27 km² national city park contains unique cultural and natural values, from castles and stately buildings to simple fishermen's huts, lakes, gardens and parks as well as the largest stock of old, mighty oaks in Northern Europe. Parts of the ecopark are u. a. Skeppsholmen , Kastellholmen , Fjäderholmarna , Djurgården , Djurgårdsstaden , Ulriksdal , Hagaparken , Beckholmen , Brunnsviken , Bergianska trädgården and the southwestern part of the Baltic Sea branch Edsviken . There are also housing estates, industrial plants, office complexes, an urban motorway and Stockholm University in the park .

Reichstag resolution

The creation of the National City Park is largely the initiative of the Swedish King Carl XVI. Thanks to Gustaf . The park is legally protected by a resolution passed by the Reichstag on December 7, 1994. New developments or other interventions are only possible under strict conditions.

This law says u. a. Literally: "Området Ulriksdal-Haga-Brunnsviken-Djurgården är en national city park. Inom en national city park for ny bebyggelse och nya anläggningar komma till stånd och andra åtgärder vidtas endast, det can be the nature utan in the parkland - och kulturvärden i övrigt skadas. "

Basically, for example: "The area" Ulriksdal-Haga-Brunnsviken-Djurgården "is a national city park. Within a national city park, new buildings and facilities may only come into being and other measures may only be taken if this can be done without interfering with the park landscape or the natural environment and without damaging historical landscape, natural or cultural values. "

The original term "Ökopark" stood for an ecological perspective. It is intended to contribute to future-proof development in Stockholm and the surrounding area while preserving the unique mix of nature and culture. The high number of visitors of around 15 million people annually proves that this was successful.

The Royal National City Park is mainly managed by the Kungliga Djurgårdens Förvaltning (Royal Zoo Administration ).

criticism

The legislation that applies to the National City Park has also been severely criticized over the years, with the main argument that it inhibits the expansion and growth of Stockholm. With the help of this legislation, a few private individuals were able to delay and make the expansion of the northern ring road ( Norra Länken ), which crosses part of the park in the tunnel, more expensive. Another example is a former industrial property that, according to the law, cannot be built on again because it is located within the park. The criticism has led to the fact that no further parks of this type were created in Sweden for the time being, even though it was originally planned.
