Norra Länken ( Swedish for "northern link") is an urban motorway in Stockholm . Norra Länken forms the northern section of the motorway ring around Stockholm ( Ringled Stockholm ) and is part of European route 4 . The first, approximately 1 km long section was opened to traffic in 1991. Work is currently underway on the second section, an approximately 4 km long tunnel. Construction work on this tunnel began in 2007 and is expected to be completed in 2016. A section will be opened to traffic on November 30, 2014. The construction costs amount to a good 1.5 billion euros.

history

The city of Stockholm had been planning a motorway ring since the 1960s (see Ringled Stockholm ), of which only the Essingeleden in the west and the Södra Länken (the southern link) have so far been realized.

A short above-ground section of the Norra Länken was opened to traffic in 1991 as an extension of the Essingeleden to the northeast. An alternative tunnel was planned for the further continuation to the east, as the route leads through the sensitive nature of the National City Park .

In September 1995 the plans for the tunnel construction project took shape when the Stockholm city government said yes to the construction of Norra Länken. Since Norra Länken will pass under the National City Park and interventions in the park will be necessary during construction, the start of construction has been blocked several times. In February 2007 the Regeringsrätten rejected all objections to the development plan for Norra Länken, so that nothing stood in the way of the start of construction. The Swedish state (through Vägverket ) will assume 75% and the City of Stockholm 25% of the construction costs, which will amount to 11.6 billion kronor (in 2007 monetary value). Construction began in 2007.

Tunnel construction of the Norra Länken

The main tunnel of the Norra Länken consists of two separate tunnel tubes, each with three lanes. The total length of the tunnel, including entrances and exits, is 11 km, of which 9 km are rock tunnels and 2 km are concrete tunnels, and three working tunnels are being built. A total of around one million m³ of rock is blasted and excavated. Three ventilation towers and 140 fans are provided in the tunnel for ventilation.

The Norra Länken has the same high level of security as the Södra Länken , which is guaranteed by 100 escape routes with a maximum distance of 150 meters. After each escape route there will be an aid station with fire extinguishing equipment and an emergency telephone. The artistic design of the tunnels will also be reminiscent of that of Södra Länken.

Construction is currently (2009) being carried out simultaneously at three workplaces and, according to calculations, should be completed in 2015.
