The motorway ring 1992

The Ringled Stockholm (Ring Stockholm) is a planned and so far unfinished city motorway ring around central Stockholm with the following sections (clockwise): Essingeleden , Norra Länken , Österleden and Södra Länken .

Serious planning had existed for the ring road around Stockholm since the 1960s. However, the realization of the entire ring was constantly postponed, partly due to a lack of financial means, partly due to the growing resistance of the population, which reached its climax in 1971 in the so-called Elm War . Until then, only the western section of the Ringled Stockholm could be opened, the Essingeleden (inauguration 1966) and later a one kilometer long section of the Norra Länken (inauguration 1991).

In 1992, a generous transport plan for Stockholm was presented, the so-called Dennis Convention , which among other things also updated the motorway ring again. In 1997 the Dennis Agreement was broken, but the construction of Södra Länken had already started and it was decided to complete the construction (inauguration 2004).

In 2006, after five years of delays, construction of Norra Länken to the east could continue. The planning turned out to be extra complicated because the five kilometer long tunnel of the Norra Länken crosses under parts of the national city park and special precautionary measures had to be taken. The opening of the Norra Länken is planned for 2015.

In 2007, the Stockholm Road Construction Office worked on preliminary studies for the eastern link, Österleden, also known as Östlig förbindelse . The Österleden also passes under the National City Park (part of Djurgården ) in a long tunnel, which will not make future planning easy. Construction can start in 2020 at the earliest; the construction period is calculated to be around ten years. The traffic load on the finished sections is already more than 100,000 vehicles per day.
