The city of Stockholm has been planning a motorway ring since the 1960s (see Ringled Stockholm ), of which only the Essingeleden in the west and the Södra Länken (the southern link) have been realized, on Norra Länken is currently (2008) being built, planned completion in 2015 .

The inauguration of Södra Länken took place on October 24, 2004. The Södra Länken section is part of the Riksväg 75 route and is an urban motorway in its entire length . The road has a total length of 6 km and has up to four lanes in each direction. The 4.6 km long tunnel section of Södra Länken is the longest tunnel in Sweden, and the longest urban motorway tunnel in all of Europe. The total length of the tunnels including the entry and exit tunnels is 17 km.

safety

The traffic is led through two separate tunnel tubes, which makes it possible to escape into the other tunnel tube in the event of an accident. It is never more than 50 meters to the next emergency exit, there are 70 of them. The tunnel safety is monitored around the clock from a traffic control center.

An extensive ventilation system with 170 fans and two ventilation towers ensures good air in the tunnel. Measuring stations are installed at 40 locations.

Each exit has been given its characteristic, artistic design to aid orientation in the tunnel.

Objective of Södra Länken

For drivers who wanted to head east from the E4 near Stockholm, i.e. to Nacka or Stockholm's archipelago, the extended trunk road ended in Årsta . Traffic jammed on the streets Huddingevägen, Hammarbybacken and Hammarby Fabriksväg on weekdays. Local residents were exposed to the following environmental pollution from noise and exhaust fumes.

The Södra Länken shortens the journey time by up to 30 minutes, while the tunnel layout of the route spares residents from the effects of traffic jams on their streets.

Planning and construction

On September 29, 1992, the Stockholm municipality decided to build a city bypass, consisting of the sections Norra Länken , Österleden, Södra Länken and Essingeleden. Construction of Södra Länken was scheduled to start in 1997. When it was completed in 2002, costs of 5.5 billion Swedish kronor (calculation and therefore monetary value from 1992) were planned.

The decision in September 1992 to expand the bypass was taken with further traffic engineering measures to develop passenger traffic in Stockholm. This concerned the expansion of individual routes on the Stockholm subway and bus lines. The financing of the entire expansion was planned through tolls.

After the Stockholm municipal elections in 1994, the previously decided project was discussed again after the alliance party Miljöpartiet declared itself against an expansion of the city motorway. After negotiations it was decided to carry out further tests with regard to the environmental compatibility of the expansion. Ultimately, Miljöpartiet's resistance to road construction led to the dissolution of the coalition in Stockholm in 1998.

Stockholm Municipality, Stockholms Läns Landsting and the Swedish government decided in December 1997 to finalize the funding of Södra Länken. The state budgeted 5.6 billion crowns for the implementation, a further 827 million crowns from the Stockholm municipality, 800 million crowns through the Landsting for the two-lane expansion of the Årstabro bridge. After the financing had been determined, construction of Södra Länken started in January 1998 . The economic benefit of the project was questioned in analyzes before the start of construction.

Todays situation

After the inauguration of Södra Länken in October 2004, the roads that were previously affected were relieved. Because of the Trängselskatt , the inner-city toll in Stockholm, many road users drive around the city center via Södra Länken and Essingeleden.

During peak times, the entrance to the Södra Länken tunnel is temporarily closed with traffic lights, as vehicles that are parked there cannot be admitted due to fire safety. An extension of the tunnel has already been considered.

Acts of sabotage

Several actions against the project were recorded during the construction work. The association Socialekologisk aktion acknowledged this in a press release. Linus Brohult, spokesman for the Socialekologisk aktion, was arrested on February 7th with other members in a similar sabotage in December 1999 and sentenced to imprisonment. The Svea hovrätt district court converted the prison sentence to serve in community service, and one party was sentenced to pay fines.
