Bergslagdiagonalen (German: "Bergslagdiagonale" after an old name of the region, bergslag means something like "Law of the Mountain") was chosen as the name for a travel route in Sweden , which leads a considerable part through the Bergslagen region , which achieved worldwide fame through ore mining .

About 90 kilometers north of Jönköping the Reichsstraße (Riksväg) 50 begins near Mjölby and runs through the Swedish inland to Söderhamn on the Hälsingland coast . At the edge of the path, signs with the inscription Bergslag diagonalen appear at regular intervals .

The 466 kilometer route leads north past Askersund at the northern tip of Lake Vättern , the town of Örebro with its historic market square and the old mining area around the Kopparberg . The road leads through forests and mountainous terrain to Borlänge and the Falun copper mine , today a UNESCO World Heritage Site , before heading east past Bollnäs to the port town of Söderhamn .

The Bergslag Diagonalen / Reichsstrasse 50 funding project was launched to strengthen the economic situation of the 17 participating communities along the route. The name Bergslag Diagonalen should be remembered as a fixed term and primarily attract tourists. As a result, new jobs were expected to be created. The sections of the Reichsstraßen 50 and 60, as well as the Landstraßen 294 and 301 were proposed for common designation in Bergslag diagonalen / Reichsstraße 50 in 2001 . Double signage is still common.

Participating municipalities

The interest group consists of the following municipalities, viewed from south to north: Ödeshög , Vadstena , Motala , Askersund , Hallsberg , Kumla , Örebro , Nora , Lindesberg , Ljusnarsberg , Ludvika , Borlänge , Falun , Ovanåker , Bollnäs , Söderhamn and Hudiksvall .
