The Riksväg 40 is a Swedish trunk road, which is partly developed as a motorway . It runs for a length of 321 km from Gothenburg to Västervik .

The road begins in Gothenburg at the Kallebäcksmotet interchange with the E6 and E20 . From there, the Riksväg 40 runs as a motorway to Dållebo (between Borås and Ulricehamn ). This section leads through very hilly and wooded area. There is often a lot of traffic between Gothenburg and Gothenburg / Landvetter Airport .
Between Dållebo and Ulricehamn, Riksväg is a normal road that often cannot withstand the traffic there, which often leads to traffic jams at this point. Due to the very curvy course, this section is one of the most dangerous road sections in Sweden.
West of Ulricehamn to Jönköping , the road continues in a 2 + 1 system similar to a motorway . Behind Jönköping, the Riksväg was renewed in 2007 and expanded to three lanes per lane, which means that it is similar to a motorway, but classified as a completely normal road. In addition, so-called heat strips were built into the road in the direction of Gothenburg, in order to enable trucks in particular to drive better in winter .
Near Jönköping the Riksväg 40 is signposted as a motorway and runs there together with the E4 to the Ekhagen exit . To the east of the exit, the road leads over a mountain with a gradient of up to 8%. On the entire route to Nässjö it is developed as a motorway-like road in the 2 + 1 system.
The road between Nässjö and Eksjö is only 8–9 meters wide. For this reason, an expansion to the 2 + 1 system is being planned. In Eksjo, the Riksväg runs through the city center. There are some sections between Eksjö and Mariannelund where overtaking is prohibited. On this section the road runs through the centers of several cities.
There is a test track for the new safety procedure on the road near Vimmerby . There grooves were milled in the middle of the street cross-section . This can prevent microsleep, as the car vibrates when it is driven over.
Between Vimmerby and the connection with the E22 , Riksväg 40 runs through an uninhabited area with many smaller lakes, some of which are crossed. Originally, before this direct route was built in the 1970s, the road curved in a wide arc north of Blackstad . This was a detour, especially for road users in the direction of Västervik and Ankarsrum.
