Vägverket was a Swedish authority that had its origins in the Kongliga styrelsen för allmänna wäg- och wattenbyggnader (Royal Administration for General Roads and Water Structures ) formed in 1843 . The head office was located in Borlänge , Sweden . On April 1, 2010 the Vägverket went together with the Banverket in the Trafikverket .

The main task of the authority was the maintenance and expansion of the Swedish road network . She was also responsible for keeping the vehicle register and for issuing driving licenses . The authority was subordinate to the Swedish parliament and the government of Sweden .

Vägverket also operated a major shipping company ( Vägverket färjerederiet ) with 38 ferry lines that were scattered across the country. It was the largest ferry company in Sweden and, by its own account, the sixth largest in the world. Trafikverket Färjerederiet will continue to operate the ferry lines, which mainly serve internal Swedish road connections across lakes and between islands .
