admission

George Harrison made several attempts to record Old Brown Shoe with the Beatles. During the recording sessions for the album Let It Be , two first versions were made on January 27, 1969. On the first recording Harrison only accompanied each other on the piano, on the second version Paul McCartney , John Lennon , Ringo Starr and George Harrison - accompanied by Billy Preston - played together. On the next two days, around ten other versions were made. None of these recordings were ever published.

On February 25, 1969, Harrison recorded a demo version of Old Brown Shoe alone . It was his 26th birthday. First he recorded the piano and vocals and then added a number of guitars. This version was published in 1996 as part of the Anthology series.

It was not until April 16, 1969 that the Beatles met in London's Abbey Road Studios to record a final version of Old Brown Shoe . Just two days earlier, Paul McCartney and John Lennon had recorded the song The Ballad of John and Yoko for a single release without Ringo Starr and George Harrison . The Old Brown Shoe should now become the B-side . Ringo Starr was still missing from the recordings. Paul McCartney played the drums again. Was produced Old Brown Shoe by George Martin and Chris Thomas , where Jeff Jarratt assisted. First, Harrison recorded another demo version of the song that morning. On the evening of April 14, 1969, four takes were made with the full cast. Piano, guitar, bass, and vocals were overdubbed onto this recording . Harrison recorded his vocals in a corner of the studio to give his voice a more intimate character. Two days later Harrison added a Hammond organ and another guitar solo to the recording .
