prehistory

Beatles, 1968

On May 11, 1968, John Lennon and Paul McCartney flew to New York , where they presented the new Beatles company Apple at press conferences and television appearances . Apple had departments for music, film, and the arts, and its primary focus was the discovery and development of talent of all kinds.

With the release of Hey Jude on August 26, 1968, a Beatles record appeared for the first time on the Apple label . In a contract, the right parties agreed that EMI and Capitol Records would take over the distribution for Apple Records by 1975. The rights to all publications of the Beatles on their Apple label remained with EMI. Apple Records would only own the rights to those artists the label signed.

Apple Inc. was founded on April 1, 1976 by Steve Jobs , Steve Wozniak and Ron Wayne with headquarters in Cupertino , USA , and was one of the first manufacturers of personal computers .

While the Beatles chose a Granny Smith apple as the logo of the label , which was designed by Gene Mahon and photographed by Paul Castell, in 1977 Rob Janoff designed a rainbow-colored striped, bitten apple silhouette for Apple Inc. Developed into a monochromatic apple silhouette over time.

The first legal dispute between Apple Corps and Apple Computer followed in 1978, which ended in 1981 with an agreement between the two right-wing parties: Apple Computer was not allowed to enter the music business and Apple Corps was not allowed to enter the computer business.

In 1991 there was another court agreement that Apple Computer was not allowed to distribute physical products that contain music.

In September 2003, Apple Corps sued Apple Computer for using the Apple logo on the iTunes Store . The court did not recognize a breach of contract.

In February 2007 there was a financial agreement between the two contracting parties that allowed Apple Computer to use all naming rights.

Furthermore, from 2007 on iTunes albums / songs by John Lennon , Paul McCartney , George Harrison and Ringo Starr were distributed. The following Beatles albums were first published in download format on November 16, 2010 on iTunes:

This was followed by the Love albums with two exclusive bonus songs in February 2011, the three double albums Anthology 1 , Anthology 2 and Anthology 3 in June 2011, Album 1 in September 2011, Let It Be… Naked in April 2013, Yellow Submarine Songtrack in June 2012 as well as Live at the BBC   and On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 in November 2013. The box The US albums and the individual albums have been available for download from iTunes since January 17, 2014 .

Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Inc. , said: “We love the Beatles and are honored and thrilled to welcome them to iTunes. It has been a long and winding road to get here. Thanks to the Beatles and EMI, we are now realizing a dream we've had since we launched iTunes ten years ago. " ("We love the Beatles and are happy to see them on iTunes. It has been a long and winding road to get here. Thanks to the Beatles and EMI, we are now realizing a dream we have had since we started iTunes ten years ago brought to market. ")

Ringo Starr commented on the agreement: “I am particularly glad to no longer be asked when the Beatles are coming to iTunes. At last, if you want it - you can get it now - The Beatles from Liverpool to now! ” ("I'm especially glad to stop being asked when the Beatles are coming to iTunes. Finally, if you want it - you can get it now - the Beatles from Liverpool so far!")

Paul McCartney added: "It's originally fantastic to see the songs we released on vinyl receive as much love in the digital world as they did the first time around." ("It's fantastic to see how the songs we originally released on vinyl find as much love in the digital world as they did the first time.")

From December 24, 2015, the core catalog (the 13 studio albums listed) and the Past Masters , 1962–1966 , 1967–1970 and Love albums were also made available from other providers and streaming services. Album 1 was also available from other providers from June 17, 2016.

Three Beatles albums were also released exclusively via iTunes : on June 14, 2011 the compilation album Anthology Highlights , on July 12, 2012 the compilation album Tomorrow Never Knows and on December 17, 2013 followed with The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963, an album with previously unreleased Recordings.

The Beatles Box Set was also offered as a download from iTunes on November 17, 2010. This “digital box” contains the remastered stereo versions of the twelve British studio albums, as well as Magical Mystery Tour and Past Masters . The content also includes The Mini Documentaries and the Video Live at the Washington Coliseum, 1964 for download . The video Live at the Washington Coliseum, 1964 was recorded on February 11, 1964 and shows the Beatles' first concert in the United States. The concert film was released separately on iTunes on May 22, 2019.

Emergence

The accompanying text on iTunes describes the Tomorrow Never Knows album as follows: "This exclusive album is a collection of the Beatles' hardest rock songs, ranging from John Lennon's distorted guitar solo at the beginning of Revolution to the mystical-psychedelic ending of Tomorrow Never Knows ."

If this description is accurate, Tomorrow Never Knows would be the replacement or follow-up album to Rock 'n' Roll Music from 1976, which has not previously been released on CD or via iTunes.

The songs Revolution , Helter Skelter , I'm Down , Back in the USSR , You Can't Do That and Hey Bulldog are also on the album Rock 'n' Roll Music .

Although the album was not officially released on a physical data carrier, 1000 12 ″ vinyl promotional albums were produced in Europe, each with a separate cover and with a supplementary sheet stating that iTunes was using until the album was released Beatles has generated $ 50 million in sales to date . The album was also re- pressed as a bootleg on colored vinyl.

A promotional CD was produced in Great Britain.

Republication
