You Can not Do That ( English something like: You can not do ) is a song by British band The Beatles , in 1964 on their third album A Hard Day's Night and as a B-side of the single Can not Buy Me Love was published . It was composed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and published under the author's name Lennon / McCartney .

You Can't Do That is mainly based on the musical ideas of John Lennon. The song was originally intended to be used for the film A Hard Day's Night . On March 31, 1964 , a film scene was filmed at the Scala Theater , London , in which the Beatles sang the song You Can't Do That in front of an audience , this scene was not used for the film, but on May 24, 1964 in shown on the Ed Sullivan show. You Can't Do That and Can't Buy Me Love were available for the next single A-side , the decision then fell on Can't Buy Me Love .

Musically, the song was influenced by Motown and in particular by Wilson Pickett . The text expresses John Lennon's jealousy and possessiveness towards women.

You Can't Do That was added to the group's live repertoire in 1964.

You Can't Do That was recorded on February 25, 1964 in London's Abbey Road Studios (Studio 2) with producer George Martin . Norman Smith was the sound engineer for the recordings. The band recorded a total of nine takes , with the 9th take also being used for the final version. On February 25, 1964, the Beatles began two more songs, I Should Have Known Better and And I Love Her , but they were not completed that day.

The song was mixed on February 26, 1964 in mono and on June 22, 1964 in stereo . On February 26, 1964, a special mono mix was made and on March 10, 1964 a special stereo mix was made for the USA.

On May 22, 1964, George Martin played a piano accompaniment for You Can't Do That , although the song had already been released by then. This version of the song is previously unreleased.
