Hey Jude is the 19th album by the British band The Beatles released in the USA . The compilation album was released on February 26, 1970. It is the 17th album by the Beatles, which was distributed by Capitol Records . Hey Jude was released in Germany on February 27, 1970, here it was their 16th album. It wasn't until May 11, 1979 that the album was released in Great Britain due to its great popularity.

Emergence

The selection of the songs for the album Hey Jude was not made by the Capitol Records label , but was initiated by Allen Klein . Klein had negotiated a more lucrative record deal for the group in 1969 as the new manager of the Beatles. Now he saw another album release as an opportunity to benefit financially from this new contract. Klein left the actual task of putting together songs for an album to his colleague Allan Steckler. Steckler chose songs that had not previously appeared on a Capitol Records album released in the US. His selection contained more material from the later years of the Beatles. The lack of songs on the Capitol albums was due, on the one hand, to the fact that the Beatles mostly did not subsequently decouple any tracks from published albums as single, and, on the other hand - in the case of I Should Have Known Better and Can't Buy Me Love - to the fact that that the rights to these songs were initially still with United Artists . Steckler did without the songs A Hard Day's Night , which was released as a single by Capitol Records in 1964 and on the soundtrack album by United Artists, I'm Down , the B-side of the single Help! , and The Inner Light , the B-side of the single Lady Madonna . Outside front also remained From Me to You , Misery and There's a Place , all for the first time in the US on the label Vee-Jay Records had appeared, and she loves you (German language version of She Loves You ) and the single version of Get Back .

Increasingly dissatisfied with Capitol Records 'work in marketing Beatles' products, Apple Records took a more active role in promoting the upcoming album. Steckler also decided not to commission the Capitol Studios with the mastering of the tapes, and instead chose Bell Sound Recording Studios in New York , where Sam Feldman created the master tape.

Originally it was planned to bring the album under the title The Beatles Again on the market. Shortly before the release, the title was changed to Hey Jude , in the hope of benefiting from the huge success of the single of the same name . The name change took place at such short notice that a number of records and audio cassettes had already been labeled with the old name. Records and corresponding audio cassettes under the old name came on the market.

The album was released in a stereo version only . For the release of the album, George Martin made stereo mixes for the songs Lady Madonna and Rain on December 2 and Hey Jude and Revolution on December 5, 1969 at Abbey Road Studios .

A mono version of Hey Jude was released in Brazil , but it was only a down-mixed stereo version and no separate mono version of its own.

In the UK, the album was made for export in March 1970 (catalog number: CPCS-106).

In Spain , when the album was released in 1970, which was titled Beatles Again there , the song The Ballad of John and Yoko was omitted, so that the second side of the album only contained three songs.

The album Hey Jude reached second place on the US charts in March 1970, where it remained for four weeks. In December 1991, the album was multi-platinum in the US for three million copies sold.

Cover design

The photos, which can be seen on the front and back of the album cover , were taken during the last joint photo shoots by the Beatles on August 22, 1969 on the then newly acquired property at Tittenhurst Park from John Lennon . The photographer was Ethan Russell.
