Rain ( English rain ) is a song by British band The Beatles in 1966. It appeared on the B-side of the single Paperback Writer . What is striking about the song is John Lennon's vocals , which are played backwards at the end of the song.

background

Rain's composition is attributed to John Lennon, but Paul McCartney later claimed to have written a not insignificant part of the song. At the same time, McCartney emphasized that the song is less noticeable for its composition, but more for its recording. Basically, Lennon and McCartney pursued the idea of gaining something good from the negative theme of " rain ". The song was released under the joint copyright of Lennon / McCartney .

admission

Rain was recorded over two days at London's Abbey Road Studios . The title was produced by George Martin , assisted by Geoff Emerick . The first recordings took place on April 14, 1966. The band recorded five takes of the song. The song was recorded at a very high tempo to later play it back more slowly. This should give the song more depth. The band had already used the same effect on Tomorrow Never Knows . Two days later, on April 16, 1966, the tambourine , bass and vocals were overdubbed . Lennon's chant at the end of the song was played backwards. This idea came about after Lennon, while under the influence of marijuana , accidentally inserted a tape with the song upside down into his tape recorder, causing the song to play backwards. He took a liking to it and brought up this idea. George Martin, on the other hand, later reported that he had the idea himself.

publication

In the UK, Rain appeared on the B-side of the single paperback Writer on June 10, 1966 . In the United States this single was released on May 30, 1966. The song can also be heard on a number of later compilations of the Beatles.
