Galaxie 500 was an American rock band from Boston that existed from 1987 to 1991 and released three influential albums during that time.

history

The band was formed in 1987 by three Harvard students who grew up in New York City and who were friends , singer and guitarist Dean Wareham , bassist Naomi Yang and drummer Damon Krukowski. They first appeared at concerts in Boston and New York and then released their first album, Today, after a few singles in 1988 .

The band then signed to Rough Trade Records and released the album On Fire in 1989 and This Is Our Music in 1990 . When Rough Trade went bankrupt , the band broke up too. Wareham then formed his band Luna , while Yang and Krukowski released records under the name Damon and Naomi .

influence

The music of Galaxie 500 influenced many indie artists, for example the slowcore band Low . They have been covered by many artists or referred to in interviews or texts. In the song Stratford-on-Guy Liz Phair sings :

"And I was pretending that I was in a Galaxie 500 video."

"And I pretended I was in a Galaxy 500 video."

Jamie Stewart from Xiu Xiu sings in the song Dr. Troll :

"Listen to On Fire and pretend someone could love you."

"Listen to On Fire and pretend someone can love you."

The Brian Jonestown Massacre named their album And This Is Our Music (2003) and related it to the Galaxie 500 album This Is Our Music . Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth described the band's debut album, Today , as "the guitar board from 1988". The song Naomi of Neutral Milk Hotel is reportedly on the Galaxie 500 bassist Naomi Yang.
