The Brian Jonestown Massacre (often abbreviated as BJM or The BJM) are a neo-psychedelic rock band that formed in San Francisco in the early 1990s .
occupation
Since its formation by Anton Newcombe and Matt Hollywood , the band has had a large number of personnel changes. Multi-instrumentalist and lead songwriter Anton Newcombe is the only member to have been with The Brian Jonestown Massacre since its inception.
There are at least two dozen musicians who have played with BJM. Former members include the tambourine player Joel Gion, a founding member of The San Francisco Dilettantes , as well as various guitarists, such as Jeff Davies, Matt Hollywood (founding member of the indie rock band The Out Crowd ), Peter Hayes (founding member of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club ) Rob Campanella (producer and studio engineer and member of The Quarter After ), Sune Rose Wagner (founding member of Psyched up Janis , The Tremolo Beer Gut and The Raveonettes ), Bobby Hecksher (founding member of The Warlocks ), Matt Tow (formerly a member of Drop City , founding member of The Lovetones ), Brian Glaze (solo artist and member of The Gris Gris ), David Koenig (member of Spindrift and Clean Prophets ). The drummer Christian Omar Madrigal Izzo from Chokebore , Shadow Project , and Christian Death 1334 was also a member of the band for a short time.
Current long-term members are Collin Hegna and Frankie “Teardrop” Emerson. Long-time guitarist Ricky Rene Maymi was replaced by Irina Yaikowsky between 2004 and 2007.
Surname
The name of the band is a combination of the name of the co-founder of the Rolling Stones , Brian Jones , and the Jonestown settlement founded by cult leader Jim Jones in 1974 , in which in 1978 the supporters of the People's Temple were partially suicide and murdered (see Jonestown massacre ).
various
Straight Up and Down (from the album Take It From The Man!, 1996) is the title and opening song ("Theme") of the Boardwalk Empire series (series start 2010).
